July 23, 2018

We are so excited about our new Pin Lover’s Club! We’ve been counting down the days until it ships on August 1st. One fun part of this club is that every month we will share a free pattern and tutorial for a Mini Pinnie! What is a Mini Pinnie? It is a fun and exclusive pincushion design that coordinates with the Pin Mini set each month. We think you are going to LOVE the exclusive Pin Mini sets we’ve designed are going to really love the Mini Pinnies that go along with them!

If you missed the news about the new club, you can check out this announcement giving all the details: Announcing our New Pin Lover’s Club! And don’t worry, there is still time to sign up to get this Pin Mini set! Click here to join and get next month’s box!

Our first Mini Pinnie is this fun and cheerful pieced pincushion that we call Amelia’s Pinwheel. It is named in honor of Rachel’s daughter Amelia! It is colorful and fun and so playful, just like Amelia! We hope you love it and have fun making it!

Amelia’s Pin Wheel Instructions:

This month’s Mini Pinnie includes a video tutorial in addition to the instructions below and the printable project page.

  • Please note, we had a technical issue while filming that caused some background noise in the video. It lasts a few minutes and then stops. We apologize and hope you enjoy the video despite the extra noise. Thankfully we resolved the issue and won’t have it in future videos.

  1. Draw a straight diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the fabric B squares.
  2. Pin the fabric B squares to the fabric C squares, right sides together, matching the edges.
  3. Sew BESIDE the drawn line with a 4” seam. Sew again 4” away on the other side of the line for a total of two seams per piece.
  4. Cut on the line. Press and open all 4 half-square triangles. Press the seams toward fabric B. Trim any dog ears.
  5. Draw a straight diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the fabric A squares.
  6. Pin the fabric B-C half-square triangles to the fabric C squares, right sides together, matching the edges. Be sure that the drawn lines on the A squares run at a 90° angle across the seams on the B-C pieces.
  7. Sew BESIDE the drawn line with a 4” seam. Sew again 4” away on the other side of the line for a total of two seams per piece.
  8. Cut on the line. Press and open all 8 patches. Press the seams toward fabric A. Trim any dog ears.
  9. Referring to the diagram, separate the patches into 2 groups.Group 1Group 2
  10. Discard the patches from Group 2 (or save for a future project). Arrange the patches in Group 1 to match the layout below.
  11. Assemble the patches in two rows, pressing the seams toward the A fabric and then join the rows and press the center seam open.
  12. The pinwheel block should measure 5” square. Now pin the 5” backing square on top of the block (right-sides-together) with the edges lined up.
  13. Sew all the way around the square (don’t leave an opening)
  14. Use our Franken-Stitch Finish technique to turn your pincushion right-side-out. Make a 2″ diagonal slit in the backing fabric ONLY.
  15. Turn the pillow right-side-out through the slit.
  16. Stuff the pillow.
  17. Whipstitch the slit closed.
  18. Optional: Add an applique heart to cover your stitches.
  19. Center a button (or button stack) on top of the pin wheel and sew in place through all the layers of the pincushion. While sewing the button, gently pull your thread tight to tuft. Watch our Button Tufting Video for a demonstration of how this works.
  20. Add your Pin Lover’s Club pins to your new pincushion and enjoy!!!
