A New Look at Button Holes

Sometimes you just feel the urge to go out on a limb...or a branch...or in this case, a flower stem.  That happened to me as I found myself imagining buttons with an odd number of holes--or holes in odd places.  Would it be possible then to sew on those buttons in really interesting ways?

After a long wait for design and production, finally the boxes arrived...lots of boxes.  I was right, the buttons are simple shapes, but the non-traditional holes make it possible to transform every flower into an enchanting bit of embroidery.  And only very simple stitches are needed!

This "poppy" button has six holes.  Imagine the possibilities!  Sew through the center to each petal then from the center into the fabric between the petals.  Add a French knot in any or all of the button holes. And to really add detail, sew a flurry of stamens behind the button before you attach it.  You only need to sew straight stitches and French knots, yet the result is charming--the perfect last detail to add to any stitching project.

Stitch a Tiny Folk Garden

To introduce the new FOLKfloral button shapes, we created 9 little Folk Garden designs--each with a variety of the new buttons plus free instructions to stitch the words in either embroidery or cross stitch.  Each design fits a 3" embroidery hoop.

A Peek at the New Floral Buttons and Leaves

Some of the FOLKfloral buttons have two holes, but many have just one--or even 6.  Here's a peek at some single-hole flower buttons--one hole, but many possibilities.

We use beautiful pearl cotton #8 from Weeks Dye Works for the embroidery and for attaching the buttons.  The colors and the size are perfect to make the stitches part of the art.  The hand-dyed shading creates gorgeous stamens and seeds for the flowers below.

I think the thistle is my favorite so far (upper left).  It has just two holes but it's far from boring because the holes are diagonal!  And is that a leaf or a flower with five petals?  Both, I think.

Stitch Some FOLKfloral for Yourself

Each of the floral thumbnails shown above are part of the series of Folk Garden designs--shown on our website.  We put together the button assortments so you can stitch the Garden designs, but you could also use these new buttons on any stitchery.  They are hand-dyed by us to be colorfast--just don't touch them with an iron.

Find all our FOLKfloral designs HERE--and watch for more.  We are just getting started!

And BONUS--because I love the thistle so much, here's an alternate chart for stitching a variation of the words!  Download this chart/pattern free to start your stitching, but you'll still need the Pink Thistle button pack #10795 to complete the garden.  The button pack includes instructions for stitching the button embroidery.

You can watch a quick clip of a video tutorial here.
