Button Lover’s Club: “Vintage Flower Basket” Pillow

We love that no matter what the word of the month for our Button Lover’s Club is, we seem to find a perfect pattern in The Splendid Sampler book to go along with it. It is truly a must-have book in any crafty-book stash! This month we couldn’t help but use the Vintage Flower Basket Pattern to create one of our mini pillows. It was if it was drawn for our featured fabric and for our new flower buttons!

As we worked on this pillow we couldn’t help but think how cute it would be stitched in wool too! We were right! Check out Tammy’s take on the pattern below.

“Vintage Flower Basket” Pillow Supplies:

• Button Lover’s Club: Words with Buttons (BLOOM Box)
• The Splendid Sampler Book
• Fabric: Smitten by Bonnie & Camille for Moda
• Measurements for fabrics are on page 70 of The Splendid Sampler.
• Peach print (for background)
• Aqua & white plaid (for basket)
• Assorted red and aqua prints (for flowers)
• Green print (for leaves)
• Aqua twill tape or rick rack (for basket handle)
• Aqua stripes (for borders) –  (2) 2” x 6½” & (2) 2” x 9¼”
• 9¼” square (for pillow backing)

• Sew Lazy Dreamy Fusible Fleece (94″ square)
• Wool Roving (for stuffing)

“Vintage Flower Basket” Pillow Instructions:

1. Follow the instructions on page 70 of The Splendid Sampler to make the “Vintage Flower Basket” Block by Pam Vieira McGinnis.
2. Add the borders (2” x 6½”) to the left and right sides of the block. Press toward the borders.
3. Add the borders (2” x 9¼”) to the top and bottom of the block. Press toward the borders.
4. Iron your block to the 9¼” square of Dreamy Fusible Fleece.
5. Quilt as desired.
6. Lay the 9¼” backing square on top of the 9¼” block, right sides together and sew all the way around the square.
7. Turn the pincushion right-side out using our Franken-Stitch Finish technique. Make a 2½″ diagonal slit in the backing fabric ONLY.
8. Turn the pillow right-side-out through the slit.
9. Stuff the pillow.
10. Whipstitch the slit closed.
11. Optional: Add an applique heart to cover your stitches.
12. Arrange buttons on your pillow and use our Snug-a-Button technique to attach them to the pillow top.

Vintage Flower Basket Pillow in Wool:

Tammy stitched her wool version using the same pattern pieces but arranged them differently. She used ric rac for her basket handle.

She used Week’s Dye Works wool: Meadow Herringbone 2176HB; Louisiana Hot Sauce 2266a; Robins Egg 2129; Dungarees 2105; and Snow Cream 1096.
